Here’s a behind-the-scenes look into the creation of a Zen Pencils toon. It starts with a very rough layout, then goes to a proper pencil sketch before I finally ink over the pencils with a pen and brush.
I then scan this in and colour it in Photoshop. You can see the finished cartoon here.

Found you through the design files this morning. Lovely illustration work, and lovely to get to see your process too- love to see how others work.
Cheers
Selby
Thanks Selby – you can see more behind-the-scenes stuff on the Facebook page
Great chatting to you at the ACA meet last night. Sorry for all the geek questions – I haven’t had time to read your blog properly! ;-0
Beautiful! love it!
How do you get that faded classic colored look? I love that style. It feels like I’m reading comics from a newspaper like old times.
Do you draw on A3 paper?
also when you ink it, do you then erase pencil lines post inking?
I like to use the ‘Paper by 53′ app on my iPad … makes it easy, but A5 size and low sensitivity of the screen make fine adjustmnets tough.
