Good news, I’ve revamped the Translations section, which now has over 350 comics in Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and French! One of my goals this year was to (finally) make an effort to get all my translated comics in one place and make them easier to view and navigate. Plus, you can now comment on individual comics and share them just as you would the English ones. I’d love to make Zen Pencils an international destination that has readers from all over the world, so please share this with as many as your friends as possible. All of these translations have been done by awesome readers who have volunteered their time.
HELP WITH TRANSLATIONS
I’m hoping to include more languages in the future. If you are interested in translating comics yourself, have some background with translations and also basic design/layout knowledge contact me via email. You will be required to edit and layout the words on the comics yourself, I just provide blank comics with the English quotes removed. Due to the number of emails I get, it may take some time for me to respond.
A big THANK YOU to all the readers who have helped so far with translations!!
Hello my beautiful readers! Get 20% off Zen Pencils posters this week, including some new designs I’ve added to the store. The Frida Kahlo Strange Like Me is now available. I’ve had to edit the comic slightly after finding out the quote is misattributed to Kahlo. You can read the full story on the updated comic post. There’s also Rumi’s The Guest House, Sophie Scholl’s The Fire Within and my own story The Calling. Choose from another 50+ designs in the store!
Hurry, the offer ends on Tuesday 29th March.
March 8 is International Women’s Day, so to celebrate here are some of the best Zen Pencils comics featuring quotes from amazing women. Women’s rights is one of the most important issues we face and I try to feature strong and inspiring women, either the women whose quotes I adapt or the characters I create. This is not something I always did well (the first 100 comics I did predominately feature quotes from men). I’d like to think I’m a bit more mature and socially aware now and I think my comics reflect that. Featuring kick-ass women on this site is even more important to me since my wife and I are expecting a baby girl in a few months, and I’d like to be able to read her these comics in the future. – Gav
Frank Herbert – Litany Against Fear (not a woman, but the comic is about a strong woman).
Sophie Scholl – The Fire Within
Maya Angelou – Phenomenal Woman
Malala Yousafzai – I Have the Right
Sylvia Plath – The Fig Tree
Amy Poehler – Great People Do Things Before They’re Ready
Anne Frank – It’s Difficult in Times Like These
Rachel Carson – Wonder & Excitement
Jane Goodall – The Power of One
My Spirit is a Roaring Sea – An Action Poem ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
The third Zen Pencils T-shirt is now available for a limited time! Rising Phoenix is one of my favourite characters and judging from your feedback, she’s one of yours too, so I thought she would make a great tee. This design can be printed on mens and womens tees and in a variety of colours and is only available until the 14th March.
I use Teespring to print my T-shirts. They use something like a Kickstarter system, where the T-shirts will only get produced once the campaign ends. Their quality is great and they have a solid return policy if you’re not happy with your shirt. You can see myself rocking the previous two designs here. So if you dig the design and want to show off your love for Rising Phoenix, make sure you secure your shirt by the 14th March. Thanks for your support!
Happy New Year dear readers! I’m working hard on a new comic but just wanted to let you know about some fun Zen Pencils events happening soon.
I’m honoured to announce that the The Bunker Cartoon Gallery in Coffs Harbour, NSW will be hosting the world’s first Zen Pencils exhibition! The Gallery is an extremely cool venue – it was a communications bunker built in WWII that has been turned into Australia’s only dedicated cartoon museum. There will be a selection of my best comics on display (the picture above is a stock photo, not my exhibition) as well as behind-the-scenes roughs, sketches and original inks. This really is a thrill to be asked to have my work displayed all fancy schmancy in frames and stuff. I wish my old art teacher who thought comics were a waste of time could see this. Who’s laughing now Mr. Harris?!
I will be attending next weekend for opening night on Friday and a workshop/talk on the Saturday morning. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Hey folks! Wow, can you believe another year has already come and gone? I’m always frantically working on comics and trying to think of new ideas that I don’t really take time to reflect on what’s happened. So this post is an attempt to go over some of the highlights of the past 12 months and also to just let you know how things are going with me and the state of the website. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Hi readers, I need your help in finding the correct attribution for the Frida Kahlo quote I turned into a comic earlier this year. Shortly after the comic was posted I received an email from reader claiming that the quote was not written by Kahlo, but that she herself had written it and that it had mistakingly become attributed to Kahlo in the chaos of the internet.
The quote in question is:
“I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.” ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Check out my new limited edition T-shirt design, featuring everyone’s favourite little warrior from the recent action poem My Spirit is a Roaring Sea. I’ve really fallen in love with this character, and judging from your amazing feedback from the comic, many of you have too! This T-shirt is available in multiple colours (more than the three shown above) and in both mens and womens shirts.
This design is a limited-edition and only available until Wednesday the 16th December. The short campaign is to make sure you get them delivered in time for Christmas (US and UK customers only). So if you’re thinking of a gift for a loved one, or maybe just a gift for yourself, this might be for you.
The shirts are sold with Teespring, which uses something like a Kickstarter model. The design is available for a limited time and will only be printed and shipped once the campaign ends. They have a great refund policy in case you order the wrong size or are unhappy with the shirt.
The previous Thousands of Candles t-shirt was a success so there will be more limited runs in the future. But don’t worry, I’m not going to be bombarding you with new designs every second week. This time, I just wanted to get another one out before Christmas.
Thanks again for your support!
