He had some pretty extreme beliefs early in his political life (which is entirely understandable, given the things he was put through as a child by white supremacists), but as long as he was being divisive, no one feared him. When he converted to Sunni Islam and started preaching a message of unity between the races is the exact moment he was deemed dangerous, and assassinated.

The new biography “A Life of Reinvention” is a great reexamination of the facts of Malcolm’s life, with the benefit of hindsight, a bit of political distance, and tremendous numbers of 1st person accounts. It is a great book for anyone trying to piece together the details of his very complex life.
