Love the coloring of this one. Esp the water.

  2. Trev

Love it bro – the water is very reminiscent of ‘The Great Wave’ woodblock to me…

  3. Alex

Where’d you get the inspiration for this one mate? Haha. Love it.

Hi. I have become a great fan of your work in one day! I am a student and am starting out with making comics myself, and have a question. How do you get the textured effect in the coloured areas in your comics (like in the sky in the final frame)? Thanks. And keep the quotes coming!

Just in case you haven’t found out already, I guess this could be of help: http://www.slrlounge.com/post-production-how-to-apply-textures-to-images-using-photoshop

Great tutorial and that’s one way to do it. For this particular final frame I just used a grunge brush over the blue sky and the sun rays are on a top layer set to overlay blending mode.

Great. Thanks for the link Hanswurst, and for the tip, Gav.

Love it! I left my job in November and am spending the year traveling Asia with my wife and reading and thinking about what I really want to do in this world.

I wasn’t even unhappy with my work – I just wanted to embrace the ability to take off and travel spontaneously, and to take more responsibility to structure my own time and work. I’d lurrrve to travel by my own boat someday.

    – From Bangkok, via India, previously from Boston.

that stuff is intense Sam, it’ll take a little while to translate the Spanish, but your comic looks like pretty powerful stuff. I’ll let you know what I think on facebook after reading a bit more

Sam tells me apparently that’s Italian, not Spanish, which might take a bit longer.

May I post it on my wall, GAV?

U mean print out and stick on your wall? sure, but the quality won’t be great – high-res prints are coming soon

I guess you’re cool with people pasting your strips on facebook walls, since you provide the links to do so!

    Great illustration.

I worked for almost 11 years at a place and got fired due to power struggles. I was left behind with a lot of bad stuff, and had to shift my life completely.

I have to say that all in all, despite being hard on the economic side of starting something anew, the feeling of freedom and doing the things you like has no price. Every day I wake up and still feel I need to craft my skills even further. Where I worked, none of that mattered.

I wish i had planned this sooner and with more resources.

For me, I interpret this as just getting out there more, and not being so shy – which is why I might be littering your comics with posts more frequently. The whole idea of this website, what you’ve done, and this quote coincides with inspiring me to not be afraid to express myself, creatively and as a person even, to friends, strangers, and random inspiring internet folk. Thanks Gavin – this totally made my Sunday.

I love almost all of your (currently 51) comics, and the quotes behind them.
I only wish I could find a true passion in order to put them to use….

*sigh* … If only. But, a lot of us have responsibilities. To our fellow man, to our friends…to our children. Maybe in 8 more years…
