We take a break from our regular broadcast schedule to bring you something very different. The talented team at LIMsomnium studio generously offered to take my Shaolin Monk comic and create an original soundtrack for it and then combine the sound and pictures into a sweet multimedia presentation! They did a fantastic job with the music – it sounds like it’s straight out of a Shaw Brothers kung-fu epic. Check it out at the link below and make sure you have your volume turned up. You can also zoom in and out of the panels with your cursor.
(not compatible with IE)
LIMsomnium are a design company based on Madeira Island that work on web design, music, web, app and game development all with the aim of bringing new techniques to old forms of entertainment (like comics). Check out their website if you need some help with your next creative project!
- Thanks so much to John and Candy from LIMsomnium for doing this.
- Let me know what you think as I might do more of this stuff in the future.
- I finally made available the Shaolin Monk print.
- Also, if you feel short-changed because there’s no new comic, here’s a interview I did in the latest Inkspot magazine (the mag for the Australian Cartoonist’s Association) that you might like to read.
Hello !
I do love every single of Your comics. Free one’s are hanging i my office.
But this one … is such a disappointment. Don’t get me wrong. Music and comics are great. But combined together. Sorry i dont feel it
Best wishes !
Huge fan
Comics and Music, when mashed up together, create a new experience. That being said, these things should not be entered into without prior thought and design. This is a nice start, Gav, but you should try again. And this time, draw one really made to have music as part of the experience.

+10 pts for “not compatible with IE”
I actually really liked this, Gav. I loved the music. It really added to the appeal of the already awesome Shaolin monk illustrations. Poo on the naysayers! Also… ditto what Wan Kidd said – +10 points for “not compatible with IE.”
Apples to Oranges. Love the “Experience”. Very zen, though there’s gotta be a more spiritual source to the concept of the quote than “armed services”. ha ha. Keep up the terrific work.
As a User Experience designer I would say that the independent entities are BRILLIANT, the music and (as usual
) your art which I always devour! But I would also agree with JB that the overall design could have been more immersive
loved the attempt! and I would look forward to more of these
cheers!
If I may add, the way panels have added transitions on mouse over really makes the idea of a comic come to life!
Thank you so much Sanjukta, we were really trying our best to bring the comic to life. This is an experiment and thus it’s still ongoing so we’re totally open to suggestions on how to make it better. Would love to have your expert opinion on how to make the UX design better. Please feel free to contact us by e-mail, twitter or facebook, you may find all our contacts at http://www.limsomnium.com and Thank you for your kind words!
AWE-SOME!!!
Thanks for the feedback – I also think it was a great first attempt and future efforts would only be better. The ‘not compatible with IE’ is because it’s still being worked on by Limsomnium, but seriously, who on Earth would ever use IE??
Nop, didn’t like it… I think its much better without the sound because our imagination can take us to a next level involving us more with the comic (needs sounds, when he is training a sound that he is giving all he haves to get better – hit sounds, tired sounds, effort sounds). Like i said my imagination can take me way farther then the music and only losses its shine. Another thing i did not like is the movements of the picture when the mouse when the mouse move over them.
I liked it! The music fit the comic, and the pacing was nice.
Movement during mouse over ?? OK, gotta go watch it again….
I loved the music and the idea of blending the two mediums. Looking forward to more of these collabarations.
Digging that last panel a lot, though I found some panels a tad confusing at the start regarding which way the mouse should be moving!
I liked it. The music went well with the comic and I like it how it was all set up. Great job.
your monk just reminded me of charlie brown. hehehehe.
the soundtrack is awesome with the comic!
A fantastic collaboration!
Is there any possibility in getting a wallpaper with the last last pic… the one that says “The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle” ? I’d like to put it on my mac.
Thank you.
It works in IE10 on Windows 8.
Wasn’t your previous post, “Less is More?”. I think comics are supposed to be comics.
Haha… Good… It reminds me of Samurai Jack..
