154. T. KRISHNAMACHARYA: Yoga poster
Bit of a change up this week. After I do a really long comic like last week’s Phenomenal Woman, I’m totally drained and it feels like some of my life force has evaporated into the ether. The last thing I want to do is pick up the pencil and draw another lengthy strip. So this week I decided to just draw something fun without using too much brainpower and also play with typography, something I haven’t done in awhile.
My brother recently opened a new yoga studio in Perth (check it out if you live in the area) so I asked him to send me some yoga quotes and I would design a poster as a gift he could hang in the new digs. He insisted I do a quote from T. Krishnamacharya (1888-1989) who was a revered yogi, healer, scholar and the ‘father of modern yoga’. So that’s what I did. While I know nothing about yoga, I have recently taken my first baby steps with trying meditation and it would do me good to remember Krishnamacharya’s words when I’m trying to focus on my breathing and quieten my hyperactive brain.
I’ve made the poster available in two versions, the blue design above and a pink variant.

I think this may be one of my favorites. Sometimes simple is just better. Congrats on your new shop btw.
Meditation can be tricky to learn at first but it’s very rewarding. Good luck on that endeavor. The fact that you are good at pacing yourself and not overdoing it is a good sign that you’ll learn it quickly. If you at all find meditating hard and you get restless, try walking meditation. I find it a lot easier. Is there a particular style of meditation you are trying?
I enjoy your work and really hope that you will not feel the necessity to explain why a posting is short or long or anything else. Just glad you are willing to share with the universe (me included).
Agreed! I am always happy to see something new from you, but you don’t owe US any kind of business rhythm. You have given us plenty to think about.
I really like this, it is indeed the benchmark for what all meditators need to know.
Although I think I would have liked to have seen the picture as T. KRISHNAMACHARYA himself.
But I still like it 🙂
Hey Gav,
I am really proud to say I am from the same place as T. Krishnamacharya. I admit, I do not know much about him apart from him being a yogi and an ayurvedic healer. Thanks for making a poster in this name. I now am curious about his works. Would love to see many more posters inspired by great Indians !
This is wonderful! As a yoga teacher myself I find myself returning to the words of Krishnamacharya often in my classes and personal practice. So glad to hear you’re taking the steps toward a greater sense of mind and awareness with meditation. I think with mindfulness of purpose you will find an entire world within you just below the chaotic surface of your thoughts. Thank you for all your work!

Brilliant! Looking forward to more nuggets of wisdom so beautifully illustrated. Would love to see a whole series from yoga masters.
