23: GEORGE CARLIN: On religious hats (EXPLICIT)
Welcome to GEORGE CARLIN WEEK at Zen Pencils! To celebrate the awesomeness of Mr Carlin and the huge influence he had on me, all three of this week’s cartoons will be Carlin quotes. PART 2, PART 3, PART 4
George Carlin (1937-2008) was an American comedian, writer, actor and is easily my favourite stand-up ever. I consider him a prophet (although he wouldn’t like to be called that) for his social, cultural and political commentary and his ability to condense the ridiculousness of humanity into hilarious and biting routines. He had a profound influence on me and my outlook on the world. Like Carlin, I was raised Catholic and growing up I noticed the same contradictions and delusional thinking that he so perfectly summarised in some of his jokes. Carlin was fearless on stage, covering everything from religion, abortion, murder, suicide, child-rearing, government, patriotism, gun-control, obesity and war. A true hero of mine.
MY TWO FAVOURITE CARLIN HBO SPECIALS (WARNING: The following links contain extremely explicit, offensive and hilarious language)
Jammin’ in New York – Although he had already been doing stand-up for over 20 years, Carlin took his routine to the next level in this 1992 special. Highlights include the ‘bigger dick foreign policy’ and a total evisceration of golf.
It’s Bad For Ya – His final special filmed in 2008, Carlin proved he had lost none of his scathing wit at the age of 70. The above quote is taken from this special and can be viewed here.
– You can buy all of Carlin’s albums and DVDs at the official George Carlin online store.
DAT Popeface!
hahhahah
Well, I agree with Carlin, but I think “thinking mandatory” would be a lot more helpful than “hats optional.” However, anything that points out the silliness of religion has to be helpful in the long run. Good cartoon!
This. 10 times this.
Finally! I had a hunch Carlin would make it here someday.
While it is hard to pick a top one out of Carlin’s routines, most of them being so brilliant, I go with ‘Saving the Planet’. In fact the ending of that routine is quite a fantastic quote which you might like to draw up 🙂
^^ This ^^ Please do. Saving the Planet is brilliant, and the end of it would be perfect for your wonderful works. 🙂
I absolutely loved this one. im a huge carlin fan and im very familiar with this routine. i really like the way you illustrated it. your site is great. keep it up
I Love your size. However I hope the commentary section won’t turn into an atheist lovefest…
OMG! I totally love being an atheist!
Hey! Me too!
We should have a orgy or something!
Or a baby barbeque, or horn-growing contest!
Hey do you care for Bill Hicks at all? I love Bill Hicks, it’d be awesome to see one of his routines illustrated by you!
Yep love Bill Hicks – i’ve already got one in mind for him
already looking forward to a bill hicks one! let me guess….life is just a ride?
not telling!
Right on! I hope to see it soon! Keep making awesome stuff!
heheheh. 😛
Hi,
nice illustration.
Just for information, in Islam isn’t necessary to put the kufi and you can put some thing else.
I’m Muslim and i love my wool flat cap.
Thanks for the info Mohammed, I didn’t know that.
yep, not compulsory. it is optional.
there is nothing in Islamic scripture that makes hats mandatory; it’s more of a cultural issue where the hat means something. During the main part of the Hajj pilgrimage men are in fact forbidden to wear hats or anything on their head to remind everyone that we are equal (similarly women only wear white headscarves). For men it is also encouraged to shave the head to further prove the point.
The kufi is a common sight because they are cheap to make, identifies the wearer as a Muslim (although Christian Arabs and Alevis do wear them as well) and is plain white. Its primary purpose is to keep the hair away from the forehead during prayer as the forehead has to touch the ground directly. In India, Muslims do not always wear white hats as Hindus also wear them in formal dress.
Similarly Hindus and Buddhists also shave their heads (or let hair grow unchecked) to show piety and dedication to their temple. The ‘turban’ mentioned in the strip is in fact a cultural syncretism common in northwestern India, where turbans are the norm for anyone.
I love George Carlin, Good job dude…keep em coming i look forward every week to see what you cook up!
Amazing work (everything!) Gavin, keep it up with all the awesomeness!
hahaha straight outa star wars, that face!!
Pope Palpatine!
Wonderfull cartoons! Awesome artwork!
: )
Wow, Carlin, freaking awesome, man! You gotta do the bit about the country going down the tubes!
THe Christian pointy hat is actualy a sympolic presentation of a fish head, since we are in age of pisces. I love your drawings and i like very much you decide to illustrate George Carlin’s quotes. Cam on anh!
So it’s basically like TF2.
I’m glad I’m not the only one to think this :p
the pope’s face was epic & the bishop at panel 11 was hilarious! hahaha
Hey, Hindus don’t wear turbans, just saying. It was more of a cultural thing, where turbans were used for formal wear, as in everyone in a king’s court wore a turban, but it wasn’t like part of the Hindu religion or something.
That, sir was EPIC.
Quite frankly, the only hat that should be worn is a “thinking” hat, and it shouldn’t be optional.
(Non-sequitur: Actually, I would love that you do some comics on Edward DeBono)
i cant bring myself to stop reading these. i have to wake up early for school tomorrow, but these are teaching me so much already. thank you!
The last panel had me holding my guts and chuckling silently in the office. Carlin’s words, but they are so well told in this comic by you.
Hindus are not required to wear a turban. For people who wear them, its a cultural thing. 9 out of 10 hindus (probably more) wont wear a turban.
sikhs can wear a turban of any color.
yeah that bothered me..
If only that was true with Team Fortress 2.
Haha love it
Kufi is optional in islam?
Every religions have their rights to be true.
not all christians have hats ,wear hats btw. u dont have to take off ur hat when u pray, ,seriously,no offense
I didn’t get to see any of Carlin’s standup until he died. I *did* watch Bill Hicks.
THERE R SOME LOGIC Y EVERY RELIGION COMMANDS U TO WEAR A HAT, TURBAN ETC.
BCOZ THE MORE THE BRAIN IS COVERED,,,,THE MORE IT GIVES PRODUCTIVITY…..MIND IT!!!! !!!!!
Explicit??? Come on…
hi am from saudi arabia, Muslims dont have to put on hates. they do not have to put any thing on there heads it is a cultural thing, actually i find it hilarious when i new convert puts on a hat.

One of the greatest atheist cartoons I have ever looked at.
Great! But the pope looks different now 😀
Maybe you could draw something with Franciscus words too…. im sure there must be something worth drawing about! 😀
Keep up the great work! Love the site!
Amazing!!! The pope face is a masterpiece 😀
Is this available in poster??
My mother’s first husband invented the propeller beanie shown in your penultimate panel.
As a strong Christian, I’m tempted to be offended by this comic. However I do have a sense of humor (for that matter God has THE sense of humor, where do you think we got it?), and I remind myself that I too am fed up with the ridiculousness of religion. Inevitably we look at what man has made of God (religion) and see’s how ridiculous it is, since man, in all his sin, selfishness, greed, hate, etc, is a ridiculous being. However, I put my faith in God himself, not what man says about God. I don’t follow a religion, I follow my heart, my spirit, and my conscience. In doing so, I am saved, physically, and spiritually, from the ridiculousness of man. I am thankful every day that God is who he is, otherwise I would have been driven mad by men a long time ago, and who knows where I would be now.
George Carlin me and my dad miss you
