44. BUDDHA: Pay it forward
Gautama Buddha (approx 563BC-483BC) was the original or ‘Supreme Buddha’ – a spiritual teacher who reached enlightenment and whose teachings Buddhism was founded on. The accepted story is that Gautama was born into a Royal family, but upon leaving the palace and witnessing the poor, sick and dying of India, he turned his back on worldly possessions and went in search of spiritual fulfilment. After years of meditation and studying with priests, Gautama reached enlightenment at age 35 and spent the rest of his life travelling and teaching disciples.
– Thanks to reader Aidan for submitting this quote.
– I am by no means an expert on Buddha so if you have insights on Buddha or his teachings, feel free to share in the comments.
– This quote is disputed on Wikiquotes as not being Buddha’s. Everywhere else I searched has him as the author so I went ahead with it.

Beautiful Gav. Love the dragon and the entire design.
Thanks as always Bearman
Was waiting for a Buddha one. Great as always, but a slight mention, Siddharta was born in Lumbini (modern day Nepal) and as such would’ve seen the sick and dying in that part of the world, but then back then there was no India or Nepal as the borders weren’t defined. And he spent his major part of his teaching years in India so it wouldn’t be wrong to say he saw the sick and dying there. Bah, I was never good with technicalities. Great stuff Gav. Keep em coming…
Siddharta was born in Nepal, yes. And Buddha was also born in Nepal. But Siddharta is not Buddha. His name was Gautama and Siddharta was his disciple.
“Siddhartha Gautama” was his name and he became the Buddha or “The Enlightened One” later. He is one of the Buddhas and was called “Gautama Buddha”. However, as per Buddhist tradition, there have been several more Buddhas. Gautama Buddha is the most important of all.
Gav, this is easily your best yet. Such a good quote, and you’ve nailed the layout!
Lovely. Reminds me of a woodblock print.
Totally agree!
perfect!
reminds me of a quote from the movie “into the wild”:
happiness only real when shared
Awesome Gav – love the design!!
Beautiful design, amazing quote.
Love the Buddha’s quote best!!!
I’m already happy just to read the quote and see your work, Gavy!
Excuse me for the word, but you, sir, are fucking awesome and your work is fucking amazing. I found your website yesterday and I liked it so much I haven’t closed the tab. I’m seen all your posters and each is more incredible then the other. This one was my favorite, and I look forward on buying it, but it’s a bit complicated since I live in Brazil. Again, congratulations for your work. I’ll share it with my friends, they deserve to see this masterpiece.
Thanks Kyro – i’ve had a few unhappy Brazilian fans who can’t get prints. What’s the deal again – they tax all their imports?
unfortunately this isn’t the only problem :(. high taxes, the worst delivery service, sending to you broken products (when you receive, if you receive). why won’t to sell your prints on a printable PDF ? we can download and print, it will be definitely easier
me fascina tu trabajo, muchas gracias por el gran trabajo que haces en tu página, siempre procuro recomendársela a algún amigo.
I understand the ‘muchas gracias’ part … you’re welcome!
Your work fascinates me, thank you very much for the great work you have on your webpage, <>
That’s the best I can do with my four year stint with Spanish in HS and lots of forgetting of it. The last part is more transliteral than the previous two.
Well, it garbled the last part of that translation. Whoops. It said “always (procuro) recommend to another friend.”
I would translate:
“I love your work, thank you very much for the great job you do in your webpage. I always try to recommend it to another friend.”
Wonderful poster Gav. And each drawing seems better than the last! I love the way you can pull off so many different styles. Great quote too.
Nice one again Gav!
Happiness in that quote by Buddha is like your talent that you keep on sharing to each of us. Very inspiring works indeed.
This is one of my favorites…I love both the design and the quote. If I were to ever get a print this would be it.
Nice job!
Gav,
Awesome, awesome art and quote selections. I was linked to your website and am not shy to admit, spent the day choking back tears as I looked through the collection. Some truly inspirational stuff here.
I ended up buying a couple of prints (which are hopefully on there way to the UK as we speak!) and am really looking forward to framing and displaying them!
Keep up the great work fella, and as Lil Cuete said “Fuck the haters”!
JBS
Thanks for the support JBS – glad you found the site
Couldn’t find the comments button so I’m replying to you here: this is absolutely a quote from the Buddha. It’s in the “Dhammapada”, or the “Buddhist’s handbook”(I was raised Theravadin Buddhist).
Wow this is absolutely incredible, both the message and the art itself. It’s easily my favorite so far. Words escape me. I honestly can’t tell you how much I love it haha. You’re awesome.
Thanks Monica, this one seems to be a favourite with a lot of readers …. mmm, interesting.
This is so awesome. Cannot wait to purchase!
If you’re interested in the Buddha’s life, I recommend Siddhartha by Herman Hesse.
Very good. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful. This should be printed on a rug. 🙂
Awesome Gav!
Fantastic. You did a great job.
Found this site just a few days ago while researching for a bachelor of science uni assignment. Have been through your archives, and I have a question for you – Have you thought about screen-printing onto t-shirts? You already have a logo, and this comic in particular would be good as a back design. People are buying posters, they would also buy shirts, and no doubt it would generate interest and more revenue for you. Along these lines, coffee mugs with the Zen logo would also be a seller. Something for you to think about at least
Thanks Shadowhound – yep definitely thought about more merch – planning on introducing more in the upcoming weeks/months
hi
nice to know more

Gav, I ‘Stumbled Upon’-ed your website/blog. You’re a good artist and I love how you have ‘visualized’ the quotes in your own style.
I devoured through the entire archives. Loved every single one of them. Please keep up the great, inspirational work.

FYI: After stumbling more, I noticed the Buddha quote here (no. 6): http://thefabweb.com/42580/30-best-quotes-in-pictures-of-the-week-may-05th-to-may-12th-2012/
This is your loveliest work yet.
Reminiscent of a “thanka” neatly done Gav. Big fan!
So… If I have a Ferrari (just an example), and I buy everyone else a Ferrari, I’m happy all the same? Please. I’m happy to buy a Ferrari because it’s a status symbol. Because most people don’t have one. Our economy is entirely based on envy and coveting and not sharing.
You can be happy without a car, you can be unhappy with the car.
the car is not happiness. If it was, you would be unable to be happy without the car.
Found your comic here too: http://thefabweb.com/42580/30-best-quotes-in-pictures-of-the-week-may-05th-to-may-12th-2012/
Hi Gav,
This is such a brilliant pic, this pic is life changing. Please let me know if an insignificant insect like myself can be of help to you or this website in someway or anyway. Is there any work at all that i can do? Please let me know.
Yours Sincerely,
Shiva Abhishek.A – India.
Yeah two things Shiva. 1) Tell all your friends about this site and 2) Don’t call yourself insignificant 🙂

WOW GAV this one blew me away.
To know everything is to know nothing.Just read it for me.I don’t mean it.I am on my way to the grocery store. No spitting on the street.I know what you wantI know what you wantMy false teeth are stuck to it.What’s your goal in life.We are prohibited from smoking on school grounds.
this is beautiful….sounds like something he’d say–wiki quotes can kick bricks with bare feet~with love of course! BEAUTIFUL INSPIRATIONAL ART WORK, AND A BEAUTIFUL CHOICE!!!
This is my favorite one so far. I really like these decorative ones over the narrative ones. The detail, color, tone and unobtrusive words are all beautifully executed! I will consult with my roommate and see how he feels about framing this for our Zen room 🙂
Perfeito
I really love your work, i wish buy some prints but I live too far from the US and the shipping will be to expensive :-(. for the moment i survive sharing and visiting your page every week.
Who says happiness works like lighting candles? There’s no logical connection between the two to assume such.
What if happiness is like a car? If someone tries to steal it from you, you run them over AND AIN’T GONNA CALL AN AMBULANCE, CAUSE THAT MOFO JUST TRIED TO STEAL YOUR CAR. You better believe I want him to be happy, but not at the cost of my car. Or my happiness, I don’t know, I confused myself.
“…… The accepted story is that Gautama was born into a Royal family, but upon leaving the palace and witnessing the poor, sick and dying of India……”
I have serious objection to this. Buddha didn’t witness poor, sick or dying people in India when he left the palace. He was born in Lumbini which is in Nepal. He spent his youth in Nepal. Then, one day when he saw poor people, sick people and even dying people of “Nepal” he decided to find the truth. He then left the palace and went on to meditate in a place which lies in India. Since this site is about Buddha, I suggest the author to ponder over the facts rather than fiction. Delve into the literature before you post something which you aren’t confident on. Thank you.
I bought this the other day at a poster sale. I have been following your artwork for a few months now, and it’s just BEAUTIFUL, but more importantly, it makes you think.
Happiness is GREATER when shared.
Here’s some information on the source of the quote: http://www.fakebuddhaquotes.com/thousands-of-candles-can-be-lighted-from-a-single-candle-and-the-life-of-the-single-candle-will-not-be-shortened/
Turns out it’s a paraphrase of Chinese text known as the Sutra of 42 Sections.

Hi. I remember the quote, it is not about happiness. Its about knowledge/wisdom, which doesn’t diminish on sharing but only multiplies. You have interpreted this to apply for happiness. However, Buddhism is not about happiness, its about putting an end to suffering.
Great little quote! Great graphics as well. very spiritual

God’s grandest messages are not loudly self-assertive. His most fragrant flowers, unlike the hollyhocks and the sunflowers, do not challenge the attention of the careless wayfarer, but hide under the cool hedgerows and only betray themselves by their sweetness. Our dearest and deepest joys are not those which we have in the glare of publicity, but those which cluster round about us in the home.

Nice Articale
Buddha did not see the sick, the poor and the dying ‘of’ India, although that is correct logically but that just puts the image that it was the people specifically of this country that made him change his life. It was that he saw a sick man, a poor man and a dying man and he understood that life was full of miseries that he hasn’t yet experienced but death is the ultimate end of it. This pushed him towards meditation to tgre extremes and when he came back, he was called the enlightened one, for he knew the ultimate truth.
