215. JIDDU KRISHNAMURTI: Anonymous creativity
Jiddu Krishnamurti knew a thing or two about fame. As a 13 year-old boy in India, he was not ‘discovered’ by a record producer or casting agent, but by one of the leaders of the Theosophical Society. The young boy was proclaimed as the next “World Teacher”, a Christ-like figure that the society had predicted would lead humanity to peace and understanding. The Society took legal guardianship of Jiddu and his brother and began preparing Krishnamurti for his destiny. He was named head of The Order of the Star in the East, an organisation specifically formed to ready the world for its new saviour and Krishnamurti spent the next 19 years travelling with the Theosophical Society, giving lectures and being an obedient Saviour in-waiting.
Then in 1929, speaking before the Order of the Star members, the 32 year-old Krishnamurti renounced his destiny and dissolved the organisation. In what must have been a legendary mic-drop moment, he said:
“I maintain that Truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. That is my point of view, and I adhere to that absolutely and unconditionally. Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproachable by any path whatsoever, cannot be organized; nor should any organization be formed to lead or to coerce people along any particular path.” (Full speech is here.)
Not interested in fame or being worshipped, Krishnamurti cut ties with the Theosophical Society and spent the next 60 years travelling, writing and speaking – tied to no religion, philosophy or dogma. He left behind a huge body of writing and lectures, much of which can be found at Krishnamurti.org

The search for the truth has its highs and lows. What is wonderful is that everyone should attempt this journey themselves…. thank you for the great comic Gav. Creativity is the reward in itself. One never feels really desperate as long as they feel the spark there inside.
Beautifully said Lola 🙂
Yes you are saying right ATC
Thanks for sharing this, Gav!
I was not aware of Krishnamurti before. This really describes how I live my life, but I never thought of it before, haha! I am a software engineer and even here, if you want to get promoted and get a good yearly raise, you had better be “famous” as a great engineer. I am not. I do my job well, I take care of my friends at work (both engineers and the janitors) and I also take care of my company in little ways that no one else notices, such as making sure the grounds look good and things get fixed around the building. I don’t do it for the money or fame, of course, because there could be none. I do it because it makes me happy.
Again, thanks for sharing this thoughtful piece! Take care!
Chris
Hi! Just want you to know I appreciate everything you’re doing there good soul ??
Hohoho, the story very nice
Wow, just a great piece to wake up to today! I hadn’t heard of Krishnamurti either, so now I have some homework to do (yay!); thanks for bringing him to my attention.
I found it interesting that Lil’ Bro wore the “rose-colored” glasses yet he was more grounded in his art than his older brother. Nice flip to the script!
I always thought people seek fame to immortalize themselves: to leave a dent in history so that people would remember them and more importantly their passion hundreds or even thousands of years later.
I mean I haven’t heard of Krishnamurti before either and there might be a very clear reason why: while it is somewhat noble to stick to ones principles, it does make it much more harder to spread you message.
How do you guys find some amazing ideas for making comics?
Thank you so much for all the comic, truely lifts my spirits up every time I read.
Very good job. It tells of my life a bit. I love the art.
lol at the guy dressed like ash ketchum.
Hacia tiempo que no tiraba un comic que me inspirara este bueno, sigue asi
Krishnamurti’s writings changed my life (sorry for the big claim, but it’s true!).
But why do I say so?
Because I didn’t buy any other self-improvement books since I’ve read a few of his books.
His writings are clear and powerful.
If there’s ONE book I’d like to recommend, it’s this one: ‘The Book Of Life’ by Jiddu Krishnamurti.
Thanks Gav for this awesome article!
thanks for the recommendation. I’m going to read it.
Not a white person in the entire comic. Hmmm.
There is one. The record contract company guy 😀
I m so relieved by reading this comic. I rap and make my own songs, I know they are good not so good but, I was always frustrated like why the views are not coming why I’m not getting famous. There’s always some pain in my head because of this. but after this comic I’m thinking deeply that why we all want to famous. thank you gav by the way I m a huge follower of ur work love you man peace
Great work Gav. Thanks for putting Krishnamurti is such an accessible form.
In a similar vein, it would be great to see a piece on George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff. http://www.gurdjieff.org/.
Very nice quote and equally nice illustration. Would have loved to see this in Indian context.
Happy to see this ! I live in the city Krishnamurti was from & have visited the great gardens of Theosophical society ( can take you around if you visit Chennai in India) ! The first Krishnamurti quote that you made into a comic was sent by me. Was wondering if I should send another but there you have done it yourself 🙂 Kudos. I think fame / success may follow or not follow us as in our chosen paths but if it does we need to realise that we are the dog and the fame is the tail, never allow the tail to wag the dog 🙂 Good Day
This process is very important for future sellers. They get “products” at very low cost, that they can sell for a huge margin of profit. And the creator can continue the unobstructed anonymous life.
Case point: Vincent Van Gogh among thousands of others. About VVG, neither he nor his brother or anyone of his dear ones, benefited from his prolific work. Beneficiaries were scores of other printers and publishers and content marketers. The world in general. While it is altrurist, it is unfair to the creator if she is starving in a hell hole.
But I agree that not focusing on popularity (end result) does take pressure off the creator and be free to create anything. Hence every creator should engage a manager who will take care of that.
Diggin’ that final panel. Humility begets richness and great beauty.
I certainly understand the sentiment, that creating should be done for the joy of creation; in the process, not the endpoint. But I have to call BS on the implied idea that anything past that is false, anything that results in recognition is impure.
It is very much our nature to want to share our joy, and we all certainly share in the joy in other’s creations. Being able to share with the creator what joy their creation has brought us closes the circle and brings us closer together. Anonymity deprives the audience of the ability to do that, with that bond, with being able to give the gift of their joy back to the creator.
Note this was not an anonymous quote, which sort of betrays the thesis! How many of the people here would feel frustrated by anonymity rather than excited and happy to have found a new creator’s work to seek out?
Well said. I would also like to add that, like it or not fame, or at least recognition, often equates to money. Money allows you to pursue your passion full time, ultimately allowing you to create more of your passion rather than spend half your time at a day job.
I love Krishnamurti’s talks. Great illustration. I hope you do more work by Krishnamurti!
the art and the quote fit so perfectly!
Bravo Gav, another good, thought provoking one. Keep them coming!
Ed
We want to be famous so we can make enough money to support ourselves doing the thing we love.
And maybe there are other reasons. We want to be famous so we can shout out to the world: hey, here I am, look at me. Remember me. Remember me after I die, spread my work, become my children.
But in the short run, we want to be famous so we can hang around doing the thing we love doing without worrying about keeping a roof over our head or where the next meal is coming from.

The reason why people want to be famous is because they want to be recognized? Who DOESN’T want their work recognized by others? I know I do. I want others to read my stories and such.
Now that I think of it, it’s best to do what you love than
Remarkable work Gav!
Love that your site now has a Random button to make wandering easier….
Love Jiddu, or Mr. K, as he liked to be called. He opened by mind to the invisible beauty within.
cool comic, nice
Amazing
Interesting. I’ve heard of Krishnamurti from dabbling in various “spiritual” studies – Eckhart Tolle, Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach
It’s kind of a weird coincidence that I came across this. I had seen the Ira Glass/Advice for Beginner’s awhile back because someone recommended it in the /Letsplay subreddit.
I really liked that comment (and sent it to my parents who are both artists), but never looked at your other work. Recently however, I’ve been going through a lot of soul-searching because of how tough being a Youtuber can be (not any worse than other art forms – performance or otherwise).
I’ve had my channel for 18 months, but I haven’t finished a single game other than Dark Souls 2 (which I’m able to speedrun). Part of the problem is that I just get involved in too many projects, but I also got disheartened that no one was watching.
I’ve changed my outlook recently though. I now see it as more of a work of art that I craft without expectations of success. I actually enjoy creating videos. Not only do I enjoy playing the games more, but I also enjoy editing which takes up the bulk of my time (being a Let’s Player isn’t as easy as some people think).
One last thing I want to say is that I’m not looking for fame and fortune with Youtube like the guy in the comic. I just want a small community of people who like watching me. Part of it is just that I need to get better at my craft. It’s frustrating, but “you just have to fight your way through”.
good job
ah.. loved the creation after a long time.. don’t mind, may be its me.
Nice thought here.. very contrast to current situation of online presence, likes and shares, where everyone want to me most famous person in their own sphere.
Bravo!
thank you

But it doesn’t pay the bills.
It’s funny how out of touch with reality some of these comics are.
You gotta love what you are doing. Nice writeup.
I’s seen Krishnamurti’s name before (I do work in a bookstore), but as you present it, the story of his life is HILARIOUS! I won’t bother mocking the Theosophical Society, as others have done it better than I could (heck, Mark Twain took his turn). But as you tell it, they went out and tried to create an Enlightened One… alas for them that they succeeded!
i love comics.
I wanna be a president. It was my ambition when I was a child hehe…
Good story in comics. Thanks
LOL, very funny…
Big fan here. When you try to tweet from this page, it doesn’t show the art or credit you with your Twitter account…I redid it as a retweet but still…should credit you more clearly!

great comic 🙂
Loveing these comics
love your drawings, they are inspiring me
Wow, as a fellow artist i truly agree. In meantime we have forget the value of knowledge and arts , and have drawn more towards worldly fame and green paper. Got an artist his/her work , passion and creativeness is his/her identity. I cheers those who still love there work and cherish the result more than being success in worlds rat race .
Thank you so much admin for all the comic, truely lifts my spirits up every time I read.

Amazing Comic. Thank you
This is love. Very creative. I love it
I love the creativity. Awesomeness
Zen Pencil really made a wonderful job here. I love this creative and would like to promote it on my blog if allowed. I love creativeness and a thing that can inspire South African Children to do amazinging wonderful. ZEN PENCIL has shown a high degree of talent and inspiring young people to be talented. The painting art of creativity seen in this story images are just amazing awesome and as such needed most to go viral. I would be delighted to have this article published on ZuluSound to reach out to young South Africans. Nothing beats a creativity that can warmly embrace the heart of young people. It is so amazing artwork that we must learn to direct our children mind towards and reduce the number of hours they spend daily on Televisions. Instead of watching Cartoons all day for laughs and jokes, persuading them to use their minds powers to draw out mind capability is everything.
