9. MARK TWAIN: No regrets
UPDATE: This quote is misattributed to Mark Twain. It’s actually from a book by H. Jackson Brown Jr., who’s most well-known for the bestselling Life’s Little Instruction Books. This quote is taken from Jackson’s book P.S. I Love you and is credited to his mother.
Mark Twain (1835-1910, real name: Samuel Clemens) was an American writer and humourist. He was known for his sharp intellect and wit, and was possibly the first ever stand-up comedian. I’m sorry to admit I haven’t read Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn … I know, I know – I’m hopeless! I found this quote in an ebook from the Location Independent site, which provides tips on how to be your own digital boss and work from anywhere in the world (sounds good to me!). Twain is a great source of quotes, and I plan to use more of his in the future.
A friend who saw this comic said the main character looks exactly like me. I guess I could really relate to this quote so I put myself in the cartoon. One of my goals this year is to set sail and do more travelling. After spending most of my twenties working for The Man it’s time to go exploring.

Love the coloring of this one. Esp the water.
Love it bro – the water is very reminiscent of ‘The Great Wave’ woodblock to me…
Yes, The Great Wave off Kanagawa – one of my favourites.
Where’d you get the inspiration for this one mate? Haha. Love it.
Hi. I have become a great fan of your work in one day! I am a student and am starting out with making comics myself, and have a question. How do you get the textured effect in the coloured areas in your comics (like in the sky in the final frame)? Thanks. And keep the quotes coming!
Just in case you haven’t found out already, I guess this could be of help: http://www.slrlounge.com/post-production-how-to-apply-textures-to-images-using-photoshop
Great tutorial and that’s one way to do it. For this particular final frame I just used a grunge brush over the blue sky and the sun rays are on a top layer set to overlay blending mode.
Great. Thanks for the link Hanswurst, and for the tip, Gav.
Love it! I left my job in November and am spending the year traveling Asia with my wife and reading and thinking about what I really want to do in this world.
I wasn’t even unhappy with my work – I just wanted to embrace the ability to take off and travel spontaneously, and to take more responsibility to structure my own time and work. I’d lurrrve to travel by my own boat someday.
— From Bangkok, via India, previously from Boston.
good one – i hope to do some travelling soon too
can I leave my “zenpencil” site? http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sam_broken_heart/166472763403865?sk=photos 🙂 is similar but more dark. I love this website and I hope You answer me…
no problem Sam – yeah much more dark.
HO
LEE
SHIT
that stuff is intense Sam, it’ll take a little while to translate the Spanish, but your comic looks like pretty powerful stuff. I’ll let you know what I think on facebook after reading a bit more
Sam tells me apparently that’s Italian, not Spanish, which might take a bit longer.
May I post it on my wall, GAV?
U mean print out and stick on your wall? sure, but the quality won’t be great – high-res prints are coming soon
I guess you’re cool with people pasting your strips on facebook walls, since you provide the links to do so!
Great illustration.
I worked for almost 11 years at a place and got fired due to power struggles. I was left behind with a lot of bad stuff, and had to shift my life completely.
I have to say that all in all, despite being hard on the economic side of starting something anew, the feeling of freedom and doing the things you like has no price. Every day I wake up and still feel I need to craft my skills even further. Where I worked, none of that mattered.
I wish i had planned this sooner and with more resources.
Thanks Marco – i wish i planned this site sooner. Good luck
?
This is so inspiring.
Thank you, Gav.
For me, I interpret this as just getting out there more, and not being so shy – which is why I might be littering your comics with posts more frequently. The whole idea of this website, what you’ve done, and this quote coincides with inspiring me to not be afraid to express myself, creatively and as a person even, to friends, strangers, and random inspiring internet folk. Thanks Gavin – this totally made my Sunday.
Thanks good to hear Kevin
I love almost all of your (currently 51) comics, and the quotes behind them.
I only wish I could find a true passion in order to put them to use….
I love Mark Twain! This is the best site I’ve found for his work – http://www.twainquotes.com
I love your work, ive been sailing without a course for a while now, but watchin this, gave me a whole different perspective of life.

Greeting from Mèxico

Hi Gav! I love your work! I guess your dream will soon be realized. Go travel some more! and for sure, you’ll be back with even more amazing material. Thank you for your work!
This is really cool Gav, I am digging on to your page, wonderful, so though provoking…all the illustrations, giving life to others thoughts, ain’t it a crime? worth doing that crime
*sigh* … If only. But, a lot of us have responsibilities. To our fellow man, to our friends…to our children. Maybe in 8 more years…
really cool, although it might not be mark twain’s quote. still excellent work!!

I’m glad I found your website – love your work and the inspiration that comes out from the quotes and the graphics!
I love this post (as I do practically all of the posters) but was sorry to discover that this almost certainly isn’t a Twain Quote. Thought I should let you know. http://quoteinvestigator.com/2011/09/29/you-did/
Good stuff Gavin! Very inspiring. Sometimes you see life more clearly when it is illustrated to you. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words or something like that. Keep it up!
This comic reminds me of Ben Stiller in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_Life_of_Walter_Mitty_(2013_film)
Of course, you drew it long before the recent movie came out, but I love the coincidence.
Any chance of making this one into a poster/canvas? I would buy it immediately!!! Love the rest of your work too; I just found it sitting at work and am holding back tears with how close some of these hit to home. I’ve always been a big fan of reading deep and meaningful quotes but along with your art they are something else.
“Tom Sawyer” and “Huckleberry Finn” are the books of Mark Twain’s that garner all the critical attention, but “Innocents Abroad” is far funnier and “Life on the Mississippi” is far more approachable for those who don’t consider themselves readers and for whom reading takes real effort.
For good quotes and life advice, I strongly urge anyone who enjoys this site to try Twain’s “Life…”. It reads more like a 21st century blog than an 18th century novel.
Hi Gav! I love your work! I guess your dream will soon be realized. Go travel some more! and for sure, you’ll be back with even more amazing material. Thank you for your work!

That’s something that tends to happen with new technologies generally: The most interesting applications turn up on a battlefield, or in a gallery.
Technology is an inherent democratizer. Because of the evolution of hardware and software, you’re able to scale up almost anything.
